Symposium on Production under
Protected Conditions in Mediterranean Climates
March 1, 2006
Tel-Aviv,
Israel
Introduction
Production of agricultural crops
under protected conditions in the Mediterranean region is usually associated,
from early spring to the end of autumn, with high levels of radiation and the
need to remove heat and reduce humidity. On the other hand, during winter the
climate is usually mild and heating requirements are moderate. Thus, most of the
protected cultivation is under plastic cover or screens. During the last two
decades, greenhouse cultivation has increased significantly in this region and
the growing season has extended such that many growers produce all year round.
Yet, the needs to manage the greenhouse microclimate, in order to continuously
improve yield and quality, still remains. Furthermore, the desire to find the
appropriate technologies and level of investment that will provide an insect
free environment and minimize development of plant diseases is still one of the
main goals. Adding to it the shortage in water in many countries in this region,
and the desire to protect the environment, encouraged the use of water recycling
in soiless culture. This issued new questions, of which one is the response of
the crops to water and fertilizer recycling in closed loop irrigation
systems.
Invitation
It is a pleasure for the Scientific
Committee to invite researchers, scientists, extension people, professionals and
growers involved in protected cultivation to participate in the symposium on
“Production under Protected Conditions in Mediterranean Climate” to be held on 1st
March 2006. The symposium is organized in collaboration with the Agro-Mashov
agricultural exhibition. The participants will have a unique opportunity to
visit a multifaceted agricultural fair.
